Banking Industry Statistics

As of December 31, 2011, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) reported that 7,357 depositary institutions held $13.9 trillion in assets.  (to access the latest data on depositary institutions use the following link: http://www.fdic.gov/bank/statistical/stats/index.html)

There were 6,290 commercial banks and 1,067 savings institutions.
